Residential programme:
Currently we have 23 residential students and 1 day scholar. The residential students comprise of 14 boys and 9 girls .
Sports:
All the boys are currently involved in soccer , athletics , swimming and table tennis. Girls are currently joining John Wesley girls for netball practice . They are also quite interested in athletics and aerobics .
Skills:
All young people(22) are currently involved in the skills programme which focuses on helping them develop both their fine and gross motor skills. Currently they have been busy with beadwork, chocolate making, soap making, sewing bags, salty dough art as well as shoemaking. All of these activities focus mainly on fine motor skills development . The tasks also involve working in groups, independently, learning patience , tolerance and the value of perseverance.
All young people are also fully engaged in food gardening once a week. Each young person has been allocated a piece of land to plant vegetables . This involves gross motor skills development and allows the young person to learn to take responsibility for their own gardens. In this way each young person has an opportunity to experience a sense of accomplishment when their garden prospers and this in turn helps to boost their level of self confidence.
Job Placement Programme:
Currently there are 3 young people who are employed via the Department of Labour. One of the 3 young people is already reunified with his family while the other 2 are still in the programme. The plan is to move these 2 young men to another facility in the community where they will be more independent-they will still receive after care support and mentorship as part of the ‘ stepping out ‘ programme.
Another young man has also managed to complete his call centre training and is currently in search of employment- He managed to attain a 90% pass in his exams.
