Life Campus Success Story

John was a refugee from Rwanda, he came to South Africa with his guardian who abandoned him. John arrived in South Africa in June 2008 in the midst of the Xenophobic attacks. He was alone in a foreign country and decided to approach the police to assist him in returning to Malawi. He was not assisted and was sent to a camp in Boksburg. After two weeks in this camp John was eventually seen by a Social Worker from the Department of Social Development who arranged for him to be placed at Kids Haven, a shelter for street and abandoned children. After six months arrangements were made for him to be placed at the Coach Life Campus Programme situated in Kempton Park to help him complete his education and gain some skills training.

John was registered at St Anthony’s College in Boksburg while being accommodated as a residential student at Life Campus. He has completed his grade 12 and is currently studying his Diploma in Youth Development through UNISA.

During his time at the Life Campus programme he has attained many skills and training in order for him to develop.

Currently he is placed at the independent flat at Life Campus and has the responsibility of managing his own chores and budget.

He is now a volunteer Child and Youth Care worker at Coach and receives a stipend every month. This ensures that he has practical experience upon completion of his Diploma.

John has displayed motivation and responsibility and is eager to complete his diploma so that he can have a promising and fruitful future.

Welcome to COACH

Coach is an integration of three children’s homes, St George’s, St Nicolas and St Joseph’s Homes. The integration of Coach occurred in the year 2002. However, our Homes have been in existence since the year 1915.

Our primary purpose is to fulfill the needs of the children in our care. Many of our young people have suffered a great deal of pain, trauma and trying times. Children come to us angry, abused, neglected and uncared for.

Our devoted professionals begin the process of identifying the needs and drawing up solutions from the initial stages of admission. Much effort is put into to this process as it requires many details on many different levels. Issues are dealt with children from the age of 0 up until the age of 18.

Our various component programmes address specific issues ranging from therapeutic care, life skills, education as well as day to day living skills. With all of our programmes, we are able to develop our children and their skills to cope in society as well as progress academically to work towards a better and brighter future.

Coach is a non governmental organization rendering services to children and families in need and as such is registered as a Public Benefit Organization with registration number 930 024 064 and is also registered as a Not for Profit Organization with registration number 052-658-NPO. As such we are exempted from tax and are able to issue a Section 18A Tax Certificate for all donations received for our worthy cause.
